It’s All in the Cards…
“Fate x Card” — Two-Player Mathematical Party Card Game
“Fate x Card” is a two-player card game. It’s easy to get started since the person only needs to get another one to participate. Players will play against each other in the game by calculation, and the player who comes up with a number that is Target Number or closer to Target Number is the winner. Under the severe impact of the covid this year, people prefer to play digital games with their friends online. Meanwhile, this game is good for playing with roommates, face to face. People meet and play games with people physically can easily cheer them up.

Fate Has Made Its Choice…
“Fate Has Made Its Choice…”
My cards, is the blade that kills you. No, you will never know until the end! Is it? Fate was calculated since the very beginning…It's all in the cards. I reckon…
“Fate x Card” was inspired by Tarot cards. We believed that numbers tell the truth and we are bound to do something. However, we can try to challenge and change our destiny to reach what we really want. Just like in the game, we don’t know which card we are going to have which is pre-set as the card deck order. We can use those cards as we want to achieve our final goals to challenge the “choices that have been made by fate”. This is what we want to share through the game.

Game Play
2 Players
Strategy Card Game [Printed]
Decks: Number Deck*2 (0-9) + Operator Deck *1(J = “+” Q = “–“,K=”x“,A = “÷“)
Magic Card (in Number Deck): Cards with a question mark on the card face drawn from the Operator deck can replace any card.

- Two players choose the deck from the Number deck (after which they have to keep drawing cards from the chosen deck)
- Before the game starts players draw one card from each of the two decks to form a Target Number and it stays the same until the end of the game and one target number for two players. For example, if Deck one draws a 4 and Deck two draws a 3, the number will be 43, both players have the same target number.
- The game starts with one player makes the calculation first. For example, 7 x 9 (7 ‘K’ 9). Next, another player makes a calculation, and the result is then used in the second round, and so on for each round the result of the calculation is used in the next game.
- The game has four rounds in total, the first round a player can draw a total of 6 cards; the second round a player can draw a total of 3 cards (the cards can be freely combined); the third round a player can draw a total of 2 cards; the third round a player can draw 1 card.
- A player wins if he or she has the “Target Number” within four rounds; if neither player has the Target Number within four rounds, the player who has the number closer to the Target Number at the end of the fourth round wins.
- Players must play a card each turn.
- Players must reveal the card they want to play during the play phase of their turn.
- If the player’s number is decimal in a turn, the decimal part is discarded. (13.567 = 13).
- Players can use the calculator in the game in order to easily calculate.

Our Next Step…
For this game as a whole, there are many aspects could improve.

- Game Machanics: We had magic cards and flex cards involving. But later we delete the machanics of flex card because we don’t have suits anymore. For further improvement of playablity and game strategy, we might include more functional cards to enrich game machanics.
- Game Balance: The structure of our cards were originally based on poker. We don’t have time to do enough playtests to balance the number of each types of cards.
- Quality of Cards: We wanted to order the formal playcard (hard card board with flat surface), but the time is limited and the order requires 5-7 business days. We ended up printing cards using the regular A4 paper and do the cutting by ourselves.
- Card Design: It took us long time to customize our Tarot style card covers and hand draw the numbers. We ended up rushing out or magic cards and operator cards. If we had more time, we will defintely improve the quality of drawings. The J Q K A is confusing, we shouldve use the signs of the four operatos instead.
- Storyline: Enrich our storyline and background setting will make our game more interesting. We currently don’t have enough stories to support our game play.
- Teamwork: During to the covid-19, we couldn’t meet each other making our teamwork to the maximum producticity, and we even worked with differen time zone.
